Should companies start looking in maintaining Temporary Resource Pool?

“A new NPR/Marist poll finds that 1 in 5 jobs in America is held by a worker under contract. Within a decade, contractors and freelancers could make up half of the American workforce.”

Like this you will find few other reviews and reports where it’s being predicted the picture of next decade workforce. More and more experienced professionals starting their own boutique firm in niche skills and upcoming technologies like AI, blockchain, Cloud. These individuals or teams are more agile, nimble in working with new technologies and open for changes and possibilities.

Even with college graduates and freshers, more and more people gearing towards finding short term assignments before really getting settled on anything which really excites them. More independence and flexibility are among top most expectation for the young workforce.

Arun Sundararajan, a management professor at New York University and author of The Sharing Economy, says this is the work arrangement for the future. The new normal will be freelance work.

I guess nobody will rule out of importance of full-time staff. Companies will still be heavily replied on their full time staff for operations and to design and offer unique services and products. There will be always some traffic of people moving in and out of this full time resource pool to temporary resource pool and other way.

Reason I am penning this down is to really seek opinion from industry experts.

Should companies start looking in maintaining Temporary Resource pool?

Managers and Product owners in companies becomes more active in sourcing where Resources of certain skills and expertise will be added in virtual pool. The resources who are identified based on their past experience from similar industry, from referrals, based skills, more importantly their Location and availability. These managers can see and compare side by side availability of temporary resources with their own team. They will be able plan and take decisions about required human resource for their upcoming initiative by soft booking temp. resources.

Obviously today there are lot of challenges to achieve something like this. There are open questions on how effectively and transparently this type of eco system will function.

There are some VMS systems like SAP, Beeline, DCR workforce, etc. already active in this space with freelancing portals like Upwork, Freelancer, etc. However much of the Temporary Workforce Management area is still untapped for improvements on predictability, trust and transparency.

Much to talk about the topic but I would like to stop here and open it for your opinion. I will publish 2nd version on same topic after your opinion and inputs.
